The icon of the Baptism of Christ, also known as the Theophany, depicts Christ entering the waters of the Jordan and the revelation of the Holy Trinity: the Son standing in the river, the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove, and the voice of the Father from Heaven.
Christ’s descent into the water is an image of humility, renewal, and the sanctification of creation. The Jordan surrounds Him while St. John the Baptist reaches toward Him from the riverbank, and the angels wait reverently on the opposite side.
In the Orthodox tradition, the Feast of Theophany is one of the great feasts of the Church and commemorates not only the Baptism of Christ, but the manifestation of God as Trinity.
